Many pet owners assume their pets’ food, water, toys, and treats are safe, yet hidden contaminants pose health risks. Mycotoxins, heavy metals, and glyphosate found in pet food and products contribute to chronic inflammation, metabolic disorders, and organ damage. Regulatory pet food safety oversight remains inconsistent, allowing harmful substances to persist in commercial diets. Diagnostic testing, including hair mineral analysis, urine mycotoxin and glyphosate testing, and serum nutrient screening, offer non-invasive methods to detect toxic exposures. Studies highlight widespread deficiencies in commercial pet foods, with significant levels of contaminants detected. Preventive strategies, including minimally processed, high-quality diets, avoidance of mercury in fish-based foods, and attention to water sourcing, are crucial to reducing toxin exposure. Increased awareness and routine screening aids veterinarians and pet owners in optimizing health and longevity in companion animals.
