Chronic kidney disease affects anywhere from 3 to 30% of our feline patients and is considered an inevitably progressive disease. Chronic inflammation and inappropriate diet are major contributing factors. Conventional treatments, including subcutaneous fluids, protein-restricted diets, erythropoietin, antibiotics and phosphate binders are utilized to treat the symptoms of feline renal disease. Integrative therapy combines food therapy principles, species appropriate diets and acupuncture with Western modalities.  Acupuncture and dietary protein levels can directly affect renal perfusion. Through manipulation of blood flow, acupuncture is effective in relieving inflammation and strengthening digestive and renal function and can be tailored to both the inflammatory and deficient stages of feline renal disease. Maybe feline renal disease does not have to be a progressive decline.
