There isn’t a veterinarian who hasn’t heard the statement “finicky cat.” Yet what we should be acknowledging is the sophistication of the feline palate and the foundation upon which it evolved. Their whole physiology emerged through evolution and survival and is attuned to seeking and fulfilling nutrient needs. These evolutionary influences, along with natural and learned feeding behaviors are critical in working with feline patients. Monotony, fixation, aversion, illness and environmental factors are primary variables affecting the feline appetite and food selections. This presentation offers a new perspective on the feline palate, explains the challenges created by commercial tastants and flavoring, and will send the attendee home with a new appreciation for feline finickiness.
